MY HEART! Veronica Eden has written the swoony, heartfelt, feel-good hockey story of the year! Iced Out is endlessly charming, adorably sweet, and hella sexy! The layered romantic chemistry, the hockey bromances, the adorable animal side-kicks, and all the flirty bantering and college fun- I could not put this lovable story down. Low angst but high emotion- it’s the kind of story that makes you fall in love with falling in love, a sincere and vulnerable reminder just how special your first real love is, and how epic it is to find someone who truly will hold your heart. AND ALL that he falls first energy!?! Gah, I just adored this book.
Y’all- HOLY MOTHER OF SWOONY BOOK BOYFRIENDS!! Easton is legit the most charming, delicious, endearing, DREAMY hero ever. Every other Veronica Eden can have a seat, because he’s my forever book boyfriend. His charm and charisma are magnetic, he’s fun and funny but also substantive as a character- the kind of hero that delights and hits the heart. And he’s just such a GOOD guy- hIs thoughtfulness and generosity- with his friends and with Maya- is just so sweet. He truly is more than the arrogant hockey star persona we initially see- he’s in fact incredibly altruistic, perhaps in ways that even hurt him. But the way he is with Maya?! I’m a goner. The way he sacrifices and shows up for her emotionally, how patient and persistent he is in wooing her and earning her trust, how he helps her heal from past emotional baggage AND in the face of real tragedy, AHH he’s just too perfect for words and the biggest dreamboat ever. He's the perfect book boyfriend- attentive, emotionally available, a dirty talker in the bedroom and a GIVER in there too. SWEET AND NASTY?! YES, sign me up. AND THEN VERONICA HAD TO GO AND GIVE HIM A CAT?!?! THIS MAN NICKNAMES, CUDDLES, TALKs TO, AND BRUSHES HIS STRAY CAT!?!?! I think I found a new religion. AND THE HE FALLS FIRST DYNAMICS- I’m in love.
And Maya is equal parts sass and sweet. She’s a heroine you can root for, that you want to be your bestie. She’s got some baggage and a lot of trust issues, and I related so much to her past heartbreak and issues with trusting, her distancing herself from people who could hurt her. But, Veronica leans more into her vulnerability than her jadedness.SHe’s spirited and lively, and I loved how she made Easton work for her trust. But, she’s not overly stubborn either- she lets him in and quickly gives over her heart, and fortunately for us Easton deserves it.
Their chemistry is TEETH ROTTING ADORABLY SWEET. They are so CUTE! I loved them together and I loved how easy it is for them to fall. The wooing, the banter, the flirting, the authentic deepening of their connection into something really impactful and substantial, it all is just so fun and genuine. heir "together" relationship arc is the real star of the show- and works SO SO SO well. I simply ADORED them and could not get enough of them together on page. The emotional intimacy aspect is chef’s kiss- and the perfect set up for the emotional finale. AND HOLY MOLY ARE THEY HOT TOGETHER! Veronica really ramps up the spice!
I’m So in love with this new world and can not wait for more from this supporting cast. Veronica has created the most endearing and lovable found family full of fun and bromantic shenanigans. These guys had me cracking up with their good natured ribbing, but at the end of the day they show up for each other as brothers. And even more so, I love how they jumped in and ALSO embraced our heroine Maya and had her back- that was the SWEETEST. The guys are just all really good guys PLUS THE ANIMALS!! I love me some four legged supporting cast. This is clearly a very character driven series- and Veronica has given us some of the most lovable and interesting characters to explore!
The best part is just how low angst this is relationally, while it also packs a wallop of emotion. The tension really comes from the non-romance parts of this story- Maya learning to trust again and dealing with an enormous looming loss. Veronica explores a story where the romance itself is not the conflict- even with the brother’s rival aspect at play. So the best part is seeing these two show up for and be there for each other during their lows instead of pushing each other way- it’s just so damn swoony and romantic. No fighting, no breakups, no misunderstandings, and I love it- it makes what is a very heavy book emotionally super digestible. But have some tissues- because the are some bittersweet and super emotional parts of this story that really hit home for me .
I can not wait for more from this world. And I’m already begging for Cameron- Veronica teases us with some REALLY exciting dynamics that may be in play for him relationally in his story, and plus he seems like a big giant teddy bear I want to cuddle. All in all, Veronica knocked this out of the park- what a fun, sexy, and heartwarming start to a college hockey world that I’m already madly in love with! And I call dibs on them all!
