The Backstagers Vol. 2, Volume 2 by James Tynion IV

5.0

What a fantastic follow-up to the first volume! Seriously, if you loved the first volume, you're gonna love this one, possibly even more. The drama is ratcheted up considerably in this volume, though unlike other series that use drama as a way of driving the narrative despite it being unnecessary, because Backstagers is all about theater it makes perfect sense. I blew through this volume more quickly than I thought I would mostly because I wanted to see how our beloved characters were going to handle a crisis that occurs (no spoilers). All of the characters are as wonderful as ever, the art style makes dramatic scenes pop and softer scenes sweeter, and while the story is rushed it doesn't feel like wasted potential. There is a lot that has not been explored and more that can be done, but for what it has presented the reader I feel like it is a satisfying story. I would love it if we get more volumes (and to my knowledge more might be coming out) but if we didn't I'd still be satisfied with what we got. It was fun, it was exciting, and despite a character having so little screen time there is a legitimately sad scene that brought a tear to my eyes. I cannot say enough wonderful stuff about this volume and this series as a whole. Everyone should give it a try, it's that amazing!
