The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino
4.0
Sweet and precisely what we'd hope for from Calvino's spectacular imagination. Honestly a gorgeous piece of fiction that anybody could make something of. The last page leads the reader into an exciting act of re-interpretation, without being too leading.
Calvino is something special - mythmaker is a cliché, but there is a peculiar element - autochthony? That we find in certain of his stories. The Baron feels culturally essential or axiomatic, such that it is strange to think it took until the mid-20thc for it to be written.
Big recommend.
