Love in the Time of Global Warming
by Francesca Lia Block
Revised rating, 2021: 3.5 stars. I didn’t love this as much the second time around. It was still lyrical and the fact that a bunch of queer as hell teenagers survived an apocalypse that their hateful parents did not was powerful. but Pen’s not-like-other-girls energy was a bit much, I hated all the “junk food is all grease” and “you can’t eat too much sugar” talk, and all the enjoyment of this I felt was spoiled by the transphobia I know is waiting for me in the sequel.
Rep: bi (I guess? the word’s never used) main character who loses an eye, trans love interest, half-Jewish gay secondary character, black gay secondary character.
CW: lots of food talk, ableist language, discussions of alcohol abuse, breaking sobriety on-page, mention of death by drug overdose, use of drugs on page, smoking on-page, discussions of the trans character’s life pre-transition using their previous name and pronouns, “born a [gender]” language, enforced femininity of trans character as a child, homophobic parents (character is kicked out of home), references to paedophilia, descriptions of people having been eaten, lots of blood and violence, vomiting, mind control, home invasion, food scarcity. I think that’s it.
Original rating, 2014: 5 stars
