The Marvelous Misadventures of Ingrid Winter
by Janne Stigen Drangsholt
Ingrid teaches literature at a Norwegian university and this humorous take on academe is a fun read. It seems that all institutions of higher education have similar issues: petty politics, bureaucratic bloat, ridiculous meetings and so on. Ingrid has trouble with committees, students and colleagues. She obsesses about a bigger house and accidentally overbids and gets one, forcing her lawyer husband into longer hours. Somehow she ends up sent to Russia to launch relations with a university there. Ingrid is a bit unhinged at times, which is played well by the author. A translation.
