DID NOT FINISH

DNF at 62%. I might return to this at some point, but it just really wasn’t holding my attention. The structure is weird for a contemporary, and there were a few things I didn’t like that all added up.

Both Fix Her Up and this one are aggressively heterosexual, if that even makes any sense, and there was needlessly gendered language like “her feminine flesh”. I probably wouldn’t have noticed if it was a one-off, but it happened often enough that I picked up on it.

There was a “she doesn’t know she’s beautiful and the hero has to teach her” moment, which I rolled my eyes hard at. Also, I get wanting to have your shit together all the time, or at least look like you do, and I love a flawed, vain heroine, but Bethany doesn’t seem to understand that she is deeply unsatisfied because no one is allowed to see the real her. It was just taking her too long to realize this.

I’m probably being unfair, and I hope these things don’t bother other readers.

Also this is random, but this book would be more fun if it was about putting the psycho sister in law, Kristin, in her place. Maybe that happens later and I just didn’t get to it but that lady is nuts and she actively tries to ruin every social environment she’s in. Yeesh.
