Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

3.0

So, all my knowledge of Peter Pan is from the Disney cartoon adaptation and boy was this book much different than that. The racism and sexism in the book are awful. The portrayal of Indigenous people is disgraceful and reflects on the racism that was present in the early 1900s. The sexism made my stomach hurt like Peter wanted Wendy to be the mother and do all the work and caretaking. I absolutely hate the ending where Peter automatically thought any little girl in the house was Wendy and he had to take her back for springcleaning. Like women are not the only people that can be a caretaker!? The academic in me wants to dissect this book for the awful sexism and write an essay about it. I also thought it was weird that Peter would randomly forget things and lose track of time, like how could he lead all of the lost boys if he cannot remember everything? I was not fond of this book and do not want to read any of the companion novels. If I have children in the future, I will not include this book in their library.
