Frankenstein: The Complete Uncensored 1818 Edition by Mary Shelley

4.0

I’m not quite sure why I read Frankenstein. Maybe because it’s on various lists of books to read before you die, or maybe due to all those B horror movies I consumed. In either case it’s not a bad read, especially considering how the cinematic treatment diverged from the story. Mary Shelley was a prolific author, and Frankenstein is her best-known work.

On one level Frankenstein is about loss, guilt, and the pointlessness of vengeance. The story is told in several voices, starting and finishing in the form of letters from Captain Walton to his sister; with Victor Frankenstein’s voice as related to Walton, and the monster’s surprisingly erudite narrative, sandwiched in between. Worth reading.
