There's a gimmick in here that I didn't exactly care for, especially because I read something that spoiled it for me, but knowing ahead didn't affect my experience with the story, and I see and appreciate what the author was doing.
I think the synopsis is misleading, because it's not simply about partner abuse in high school – that's just the main plot thread that links everything together. It's really about dealing with difficult, real issues as a teenager, which is very true to life.
This was a very well-written and nuanced story. The characters were developed and well-rounded, adding a vital level of reality to the story. I especially appreciated the portrayal of the loved ones who think they're doing their best to help, and the hard step of communicating different needs to them.
