Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore
5.0
After A Dirty Job, Christopher Moore's vampire books are my favorites of his. You Suck was my first ever Author Guy experience and, even though I accidentally skipped this first book entirely, I was instantly in love with Tommy and Jody and their incredibly tender yet wildly dysfunctional love story. Sometimes I can't believe I was smart enough to fall in love with Christopher Moore's writing when I was only 13 years old, but goddamn it I am glad 13-year-old Me typed You Suck into Barnes and Noble's search engine 11 years ago.
While this isn't Moore's most hilarious or refined work, it lays an excellent foundation for the next book, which is one of his most hilarious, refined works. I also kind of like that this book is a little rough around the edges, so we can see how Moore has grown as a writer and a person in the 12 years between books one and two.
Tommy and Jody will forever go down as one of my favorite literary couples, not because their love story is grand, not because their relationship is perfect (because it isn't), but because of their immediate trust and respect for one another. Even though they're fucked up people who, ultimately their relationship makes them better people.
This was a real treat to return to and I can't wait to...ahem, sink my teeth back into You Suck next. Catch you on the flip.
