Verity by Colleen Hoover
4.0
dark mysterious tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I was really enjoying this the whole way through but I have pretty mixed feelings about the ending . It was super fast paced, super dark in a very intriguing way and every character was kinda suss. But the ending, the letter, was just way too far fetched for me to have any kind of reaction to it other than 'wait seriously, thats the twist?'. I get its kinda up to interpretation but it did feel like it just kinda came out of nowhere.

It didn't even need to have a twist, not all thrillers need to have a twist to be great story. But the entire way through it felt like little hints were being given about other characters being suss that very much felt like they were leading up to some big twist, but instead they led nowhere and a random, unbelievable twist instead. Idk, I know the twist works for a lot of people who love this book, but I can't help but kinda just feel cheated by the ending.

That said, the rest of the book I really enjoyed and thought it was brilliantly done.

Okay third edit (credit for it making you think haha): very mild spoilers btw
Lowen kinda sucked, which fair enough, but honestly mostly she was just kinda dumb, frustratingly so and looking back, deliberately so. It was very convenient to the plot and to make the reveals more shocking that Lowen just showed no common sense the whole way through, which I kinda get, but also again seems kinda cheap. <spoilers>  that said, the more I think about it the more like into it I feel, so just from the amount there is to discuss and debate about it, 4 stars
