This Country: Searching for Home in (Very) Rural America by Navied Mahdavian

adventurous challenging reflective medium-paced

4.75

At the dawn of the Trump era in rural America, Persian-American Navied and his wife move from San Francisco to middle-of-nowhere Idaho.  They’re fish out of water, but they’re accomplishing the American dream—building a home and trying to grow their family—while attempting to bring something new to an unchanging place.  Weaving amongst a culture of ranchers, gun-owners and happy hunters, Navied’s commentary is humorous and sensitive, ranging in topic from ecology to etymology.  Ultimately, he and his wife must consider what many other parents are considering today—is this a safe place for my child to live?  Having grown up in a rural area myself, this book touched me deeply.
