The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
5.0
adventurous sad medium-paced

Hard to believe this was written in 1895 and was Wells's first book.  (I had to google to work out whether there should be an 's' after that possessive apostrophe!).  This reads really well today - the "time-traveller" sits down to recount his adventure to a group of gentlemen (no women of course!) and Wells uses the story to give us some insight into how he thought the human race might evolve - into two very different species!  The Eloi are clearly what the rich evolved into - just frail fluffy people who play all day, and the Morlocks are the working class - underground dwellers who cannot stand the light.   The traveller also goes further forward to a period when the earth is nearing its end.  Sobering to think that all traces of human endeavour will one day be entirely wiped away.

I particularly liked the introduction to Wells's life where it is claimed he suggested his epitaph should be "I told you so.  You damned fools."
