This book was a bit of a let down from the first. It has turned into a why choose/potential MFM situation, which I am all for, but the relationships are still underdeveloped. Despite their spice on page, all Cal and Mendax seem to have in common is that she can be a bit murdery sometimes and lots and lots of instalust. Fine. Then in comes Eli, sure, I am told they were/are best friends, I'm told he loves her, I'm told she loves him, but every time he makes a move she seems uncomfortable, she doesn't spend much quality time with him, she doesn't stick up for him, and she constantly thinks of Medax when she is talking to, thinking about, or declaring any feelings for Eli. Don't get me started on Walter, he's the definition of telling vs showing. We are shown nothing of their developing relationship but she dumps on us that they've been closer than close for weeks and he's the only ones she's confiding in. I don't get it. It's not making me root for anyone now, it's making me frustrated with her.
Will I read book 3? Possibly, I'll give the author a chance to bounce back and figure out her relationship/character building a bit better now thatwe're down to just Eli and Mendax . I hope, anyway, because if we get yet another non-death I'll yeet the damn book I swear.
