City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

4.0

When I first read this as part of the initial trilogy, I thought it was my least favorite, but both of my rereads have seriously impressed me. It has it's flaws (which would normally drop it to 3.5, but I want to stay true to my initial and improved reading experiences), particularly that some of the character interactions are unnatural and forced for the sake of exposition. However, I think it operates really well as a second book and puts our characters in interesting and compelling circumstances meant to test them. Plus, I have a better appreciation of angst now lol.
