The Neighbor's Secret by L. Alison Heller

4.0

This book is a fast-paced psychological thriller, laced with dry humor and dark edges. The big cast of characters all reside in Cottonwood Estates, an exclusive, sought-after community, known for its good schools, safe neighborhoods and very involved parents. The residents keep an eye on each other, and some attend a monthly book club, for dinner, drinks, friendship and gossip. The three primary characters, Annie, Lena and Jen, all want the best for their children: happiness, safety, solid educations and bright futures. Yet, beneath the shiny veneer and facade of perfect families and enviable neighbors, a dark thread lurks just below the surface. This sunny, quiet enclave is steeped in lies and deceit. Everything is not quite as it seems. The three women each harbor
shocking secrets that threaten their carefully-constructed lives, secrets that they will go to great lengths to protect. Heller creates slow-build, crescendo suspense with multiple twists and turns. Surprises abound. The reader is never certain what will happen next, and this keeps the pages turning. The author also creates complicated characters with shades, flaws, questionable motives and the best of intentions. After reading it, you may wonder just how well you truly know your neighbors!
