Scammer by Caroline Calloway
4.0

Scammer is a masterpiece of a memoir. There's no doubt in my mind that Calloway is a bit of a genius, and this book has felt more alive than so many traditionally published, buttoned-up memoirs I've read in the past few years. It bleeds and kicks and screams -- but there are also moments of poetry that feel surprising and poignant. Count me as a fan of Calloway's.

However, I did see some typos and errors, and the layout of the text feels a bit unprofessional. (Why is there an extra space between every paragraph?) The "self-publishy" feel of the book detracts from what it's going for, which is why it fell short of 5 stars from me. I think it could have used an editor's eye and more thoughtfulness of form, but you can't argue that the content is engaging. I read this "daybook" in a day-- and couldn't put it down.
