Shakespeare’s ability to transform a real aspect of history into a sensational and dramatic tragedy is truly remarkable. Richard III, despite being a history play, aligns with the structure, tropes, and general feeling of a typical Shakespeare tragedy in the best way possible, bearing many similarities to plays such as Othello and Titus Andronicus. This makes for a highly entertaining play filled with murder, betrayal, manipulation, and gore in spades. Richard III is by far one of my favourites, if not my favourite, of Shakespeare’s entire oeuvre.
