A Rake of His Own
by A.J. Lancaster
adventurous
emotional
mysterious
medium-paced
"A Rake of His Own" definitely had the fall vibes I needed to kick off the season. Wonderfully witty and lovable lead characters, fae magic, and a murder mystery in an academic setting. Also a I refuse to let myself fall in love with you romance with sexual tension so sharp it could draw blood? Sign me up.
This books was SO close to a 5 star for me, but the overall pacing threw me off every now and again. There was a lot of traveling back and forth to different locations which grew repetitive (I couldn’t remember the timeline of events as soon as I was finished reading because the setting bounced around so much.) I also personally found that some conversations went on longer than necessary without bringing anything meaningful to the story. I think just by cutting out some of the in-between moments that didn’t give me as the reader anything new I would have been much more engaged with the plot.
All that being said, I did have an overall enjoyable experience with this book and I really fell in love with these characters (Marius and I share both a college education in Botany and abandonment issues, needless to say, he stole my heart immediately).
I read this novel as a standalone, having not read any of the Stariel Series prior, and I think it worked well even on it's lonesome. Of course there were times when I got the sense I had missed something, but it was never enough to pull me from the story or make me feel as though I was blinded to a major plot point. (Though, now that I’ve met Hetta, I will be going back to read the whole series because I can tell I’ll love her!)
