Closer to a 3.5. This was my first Stephen King novel and to be honest…it was a little bit of a slog. I don’t personally appreciate colloquial speech and grammatical error as a way to simplify a character for the audience. Overall, I liked the idea and I found the relationship with the dog super compelling but I wasn’t impressed by or nearly as excited reading the book as I had been reading about the book before it came out. I think it took a lot of shortcuts and emphasized portions of the story that didn’t feel as necessary to me. It altogether felt a bit sketched out and incomplete. I enjoyed it enough but if this didn’t have the weight of the author behind it, I’d easily say this book was a 3 or maybe slightly below that. I’m not sorry that I read the book but having been eagerly anticipating this read it feels a bit disappointing. I don’t think it was fleshed out enough to really capture my heart or attention.
