Cursed
by Benedict Jacka
So this series is definitely well written, even if it relies a LOT on deus ex machina scenarios, the protagonist is just as grouchy and likeable as any action narrator and the magical system is soft enough around the edges that you can take in stride any kind of bullshit he can "suddendly discover" to help himself with.
That said, the plot works, the characters are a bit on the shallow side, and the young sidekick of the main character has her behaviour and brain quite clearly demoted to "kid" in this book. Which is at times hard to swallow since the protagonist has really some confusion to work through about his own age and his relationship with other people, especially the ones he is attracted to. It doesn't stretch too much believability and it is not so plot forward, though: I have been a late twenties-early thirties person too and you really have not learned yet how you should treat and consider younger adults in their early twenties.
As always, I'm very critical about books I like and had fun with. It could have been way more polished, that's what I'm saying.
