God's War by Kameron Hurley

And well, that's a zero. I should have stopped reading but the book did a few interesting things with gender expectations at the beginning that kept me reading and then it was somehow too late. But finishing it was a matter of forcing myself.

The book is too much: too much piled on about the world, too heavy handed. Too much violence to the point where it gets just gimmicky and unbelievable (and I can handle a lot of violence in the books - also, if you go for sexualized violence, go for it, do not imply it and shy away, not in a book where we are live in the head of a character whose fingers get cut off). Too many rookie mistakes that the villains do. Too unbelievable that everything depends on this one character and she succeeds (if somebody were a monarch of such a country, would a mercenary really be your last resort in such a moment? You would not survive long as a monarch). Too heavy handed gender politics - the individual countries are too clearly stereotypes which could work in the hand of an amazing author (read: one that can do shades) but absolutely does not here.

I really wanted to love this book. I really wanted to at least like it once I realized that love is not happening. But unfortunately, no. Well, I guess I will keep searching for more contemporary female sf authors to love.
