The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler

5.0

Worlds better than The Big Sleep. Marlowe is a deeper and more interesting character, and Chandler's plotting and social intelligence is far, far more advanced. A few speechy parts (which are useful to me as an intellectual historian but a bit tedious as far as prose goes), but also a greater naturalness in the similes and other flourishes that make Chandler so unique as a mystery writer. The dialogue, as always, crackles.
