Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay
2.0

2/5 Stars

Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay just wasn’t for me. Honestly, I don’t even think it should be categorized as horror.

I went into this book excited by the concept: a man reflecting on a past film project he worked on with friends during their college days in the ’90s, with the story shifting between then and the present day, when he’s in his 50s. I expected either a haunted film set or some kind of true crime twist. It was neither.

About halfway through, the narration started to feel disjointed, and the main character became increasingly unlikable. His voice was hard to connect with, and his constant self-deprecation mixed with overly intellectual language just came off as awkward. It felt like the author was trying to make him sound egotistical through elaborate vocabulary, but it clashed with the character’s insecure tone.

By the end, I still wasn’t sure what kind of movie they were even trying to make. It felt like it had no real plot—much like the book itself.

A cool idea, but the execution left me disappointed.
