- Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
Was so happy to get this ARC from NetGalley as I have been wanting to read Ann Cleeves. I watch some of the tv shows based on her novels, one of which is Shetland, of which this is the ninth book. Since I have seen these characters on tv, I felt I already knew them….their personalities, their flaws….
Since I had seen the tv show, I had an understanding of the islands where the novel is set. As I like to picture what I am reading, I was able to do so easily. Of course, there are things that happen in this story that might be unfamiliar to American readers, even phrases or words that are unknown. Reading novels like this is a wonderful way to gain an understanding of life in other countries.
This novel features Jimmy Perez and his partner, Willow, who both work with the police. Together they have a young son and are expecting a second child. Technically, Willow is Jimmy’s boss, yet they work more as a team.
The story begins with the death of Jimmy’s lifelong friend Archie which is followed by more events leading to many questions across a couple islands Jimmy and Willow cover. The story is well-written with any clues to the conclusion well hidden by the author.
Now that I have read a Cleeves book, I want to read more.
