The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
4.0
This is a very emotional book and I think that everyone should read it at least once. It is a well-written “coming of age” story and I feel like it is just very realistic. However, it is pretty sad and there are multiple scenes that just break my heart. This is my second time reading this book and I liked it about the same as the first time. This time I have a few more thoughts though:
I am trying to pay attention to how he talks about his Aunt Helen this time around because I missed things the first time. The psychiatrist he is seeing keeps asking about his childhood, and he does mention that Helen was molested as a child. I think I got it now…he was molested by Helen and when Sam tries to touch him his memory kind of “unlocks”…
I don’t understand how nothing was done to keep Charlie safer. He’s a gifted child and I feel like no one really cared about that.
"Even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can choose where we can go from there."

There is so much dysfunction in Charlie’s family. I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on these things the first time I read it. His sister is allowing herself to have an abusive relationship. He witnessed a rape…I am trying to pay attention to how he talks about his Aunt Helen this time around because I missed things the first time.
