this book was extremely slow-paced, but the world building is such a delight that i fear i bought the next book anyway. Doesn’t hurt that the rest of the series is so short; not much of a time commitment to see a conclusion
The plot…. It doesn’t meander as much as it bubbles SO slowly where it needs to. It’s not that nothing happens, it’s just that the action is so understated in the face of coloring an incredibly diverse and complex society. Pacing went to the wayside in favor of incredible character development and worldbuilding. The country names and races ran together a bit because only 2 of them were really used, but the pantheon of gods, the post-war context, the fraught nature of a country robbed of its religious freedom teems throughout the pages. Despite feeling like I was constantly waiting for a big event, I had a great time learning why characters did the things they did, what gods people worshipped at what times, etc.
on to the next book!
