lynnbettencourt 's review for:
Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons
by Lorna Landvik
A book club selection for a ladies book club. It is definitely not my normal category of literature. It did drag on a little bit for me, though overall I did enjoy it. I can't say that each of the women had a distinct voice (the only way I could tell which section I was in was by the content of the story), and there were times it switched to third person preceding letters from Faith which annoyed me.
The story spans through three decades and really shows a lot of timely historical references (America's struggle to give up smoking, the AIDS epidemic within the gay community, PTSD as a result of the Vietnam war, etc.) and also a lot of emotional trials (adopting, secret lives, domestic violence, faith, cancer, facing death, etc.). I found myself feeling a bit depressed at different points, usually when a new decade happened. It reminded me how quickly life slips by and you have to make the most of it. Surround yourself with people that are worth your time and effort.
