- Loveable characters? It's complicated
3.5
I was unsure whether I wanted to read this at all after I finished Caraval because I knew this would be told from Tella's POV and I couldn't stand her in the first book. But I actually ended up liking her a lot more as a protagonist, because of how headstrong she was - I found it a lot more fun to read a character that was ready to do whatever it took to get to her goal, unlike how whiny and passive Scarlett sometimes was. The most prominent example is probably Scarlett vs. Tella meeting Aiko for the first time, or when Tella threatened Aiko to get what she wanted LOL.
I also like Garber's writing style, it's very sharp and fast-paced, which makes it hard to put down. Still, the descriptions sometimes went way overboard. Not in the sense that it painted a hyper-detailed picture, but more of a mushy, confusing painting you need to stare at for five minutes to make sense of it.
Don't really get the hype around Jacks, though, I have to admit :,)
CAWPILE rating: 3.8 stars, rounded down to 3.5 stars
