The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies by Andrew McAfee, Erik Brynjolfsson

3.0

Ultimately optimistic about the effects of technology on both economy and culture, Brynjolfsson and McAfee do enumerate some of the shortcomings and risks of the second machine age. While I found their mitigating policy recommendations to be a good start, I believe they overlook some fundamental design choices within technological design that deserve equal treatment. Building our technology in more thoughtful ways may end up obviating the need for some or all of the policy-based solutions they propose. A more balanced evaluation of the technology side of the equation may have brought these ideas to light.
