When I discuss the Fifty Shade trilogy with people I usually tell them that I read it at just the right time. I was a freshman in college (I think) and didn’t really have much grasp on romance, kinky sex or any of the anomalies that make people hate Fifty Shades so much. I didn’t really have any strong feelings about it. I mainly read it because of the hype behind the sex scenes. While I never got why people hated it so much (still kinda don’t), I never thought Ana was too bright.
Ask a guy to spank ya and then get mad that he gave you what you asked for? Laughable.
However, at age 19, I still saw the enchantment in Christian Grey being a scorned enigma.
Grey successfully stripped me of that fascination.
There weren’t many elements introduced that made me understand more about Christian. The main things that gave a good glimpse of his psyche that we hadn’t heard before were childhood flashbacks. Grey begins with them and they appear throughout in the form of nightmares. We know why he goes out of his way for Anna and how she affects his state of mind.
Not that I was ever interested in this component, but I still don’t understand what Christian does for a living. I just know that he’s rich enough to do it call an assistant or two and have them complete his everyday minuscule tasks. Nevertheless, the talk about his work is boring and unnecessary.
One person I wish Christian had talked about is Elena. I wanted to know why and how she enchanted him into The Life. There’s very little to be said about her other than her intrusive text messages, whatever remaining hold she has on Christian, and whatever he tells Ana. Since we don’t know their story and somehow Elena is still in his life, I really only had Ana’s opinions to go on so the more the defends Elena, the more uncomfortable i became since Christian Grey comes off as a rape
apologist.
Overall, this book is long for no reason. I would only recommend it to Fifty Shades
superfans who just “can’t get enough.
SN: Was it just a coincidence that Elena and author share same initials? (E.L.)
Happy Reading!
