Sugimoto is a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war who earned the nickname “The Immortal Sugimoto” for having survived many near-fatal woundings on the battlefield. He heard there was gold left to pan in the Hokkaido region, so after the war, he set off to try to make a quick fortune in order to take care of the woman he loves. But, the rivers have already been picked clean. One day, he hears a tall tale of a group of prisoners with tattoos leading to Hokkaido’s hidden gold horde. What initially seemed to be the nonsense of a drunken man sets Sugimoto on an epic quest deep into the Hokkaido wilderness, teaming up with a capable Ainu huntress named Asirpa, and plenty more attempts on his life.

Much of this title is very intense and hyper-realistic, but grippingly engaging. Sugimoto and Asirpa are a fantastic duo - Asirpa is knowledgable about the natural world, while Sugimoto is exceedingly violent and keenly aware of the twistedness of his fellow man. The premise is slightly absurd, but Noda brings you in with this captivating tale and heartfelt motivation for Sugimoto that you can't help but be swept up immediately and along for the ride. The art is also extremely realistic with exquisitely detailed scenery in large panels and spreads that are beautiful to behold.

VIZ rates this series as mature. While this volume was not shy about showing the violence and viscera and including uncensored cussing, there were no sexual situations yet. Since it’s rated mature, there will most likely be nudity in the future.
