Run: Book One
by Afua Richardson, Nate Powell, John Lewis, Andrew Aydin
I liked it! I think it might not be quite as good in general as March, but I also found it to be better in some respects.
The inner workings of SNCC aren't that interesting, however, I think humanizing some of the figures is great. I think the approved contemporary take on the civil rights movement of the 60s is that it was populated by saints, fought the righteous fight very well, and was opposed by evil and monolithic racism. I like it better made up of real people who are often young, make mistakes, have some bad ideas with the good ones, have allies from many races and backgrounds, and live in a complicated world.
Stokely Carmichael is a dick. I remember him, and Malcolm X, being jerks in March as well. American public school history is pretty poor. What little we did read about civil rights in the 60s was dominated by MLK and made him the undisputed champion and leader of the movement. Of course there would be haters, hangers on, opportunists, and people who sincerely and genuinely disagreed about the best way to achieve similar ends.
In any real political struggle there are always going to be less than appealing allies. I liked that he included them. If candidate X is a racist, but noticeably less so than candidate Y, then he is your guy in a two man race.
I never knew where the black panther emblem/name came from. I had not idea it was a school mascot co-opted on the fly.
