A Kingdom of Stars and Shadows
by Holly Renee
4 ⭐ 'From Blood and Ash' Lite.
This is exactly the kind of book I was ravenous for at the beginning of 2021. I was tired of waiting for 'A Crown of Gilded Bones' and I kept rereading books #1 and #2 from FBAA like a sucker, since I felt like no other series really scratched that fantasy romance itch. I wished I'd have had this book back then.
Did it surprise me at any point? No. I could see the "twists" a mile away but, tbh, I was excited for them to come, and I kind of wished they'd had happened sooner. This book felt comforting, almost like a reread, and the only reason I can think of for that is because it felt almost like a retelling of 'From Blood and Ash', and I loved it. From the 'chosen one' heroine with a penchant to keep daggers in her person, who the royals insist she always dresses in white and refuse to acknowledge she has untapped powerful magic; to the 'slowing falling for the wrong guy who is tasked to keep her safe, plotline - this book was just familiar.
And I'm aware that for some people that might be a big no, but I kind of liked it. I certainly liked it the first time when I read FBAA and now, with slightly different characters and details, and with even more smut? Sign me up! I mean, seriously, there is a scene where the hero uses a book to get her off... You really can't get more bibliophile than that! And I'm always up for interesting props during smutty scenes, so 10/10 really.
If you're looking for a fun, entertaining and smutty fantasy romance - this is the book for you!
