The Field Guide to the North American Teenager by Ben Philippe

5.0

A nice and easy read with a lot of laugh out loud moments. I loved Norris's personality and how witty and quick with comebacks he is, as well as his overall sense of humour. The same goes for the rest of the characters; they were all pretty quick on their feet which made for a fun read. Those were definitely my favourite parts. The book was generally on the light-hearted side, not too serious of a tone, but it definitely addressed some important issues and executed those scenes very well. I genuinely loved how crude and vulgar the characters are, especially Norris. Made for a very authentic teenager feel which I haven't experienced in any other novel revolving around teens yet. They all seem to shy away from what really goes on in a teen's mind, but Ben Philippe doesn't. His characters truly feel like realistic teens, and I'm so here for it.

I still can't believe this book was a Battle of the Books novel. I would have for sure thought it'd be deemed too inappropriate for school, but I'm glad to see it is. I'm seriously tired of things being deemed as "inappropriate" especially if it's because of sex or sexual things. It's insanely annoying. Especially with books targeted at teens, because news flash! Teens think about sex and have sex a lot! So, it's tiresome for it to be such a taboo topic all the time, because it's nothing to be ashamed of and it's getting a little old.
