Diablo by Cora Rose

5.0

Diablo is the seventh installment of Cora Rose’s unexpected series, however, it can be read as a standalone! It’s a M/M forced proximity, high-heat, low-angst, bodyguard romance. This novel is a little bit different from Cora Rose’s others, so please ensure you review the content warning before diving in.

After his service with the Marine Corps, Skylar takes the next logical career step and becomes a personal bodyguard. His latest client is mob boss Anthony Costello’s son, Diablo. Diablo’s everything Skylar can’t stand - rude, spoiled, bratty, and chaotic. After Diablo crosses the wrong person, he and Skylar are forced to flee to a secluded safehouse. As Skylar tries to keep Diablo safe, he fights him every step of the way. It seems like Diablo needs something he’s not ready to ask for, and Skylar is more than willing to give it to him.

“Skylar doesn't even blink. He takes my verbal abuse far too well. No matter how hard I push, he never reacts, and it makes me furious. It makes my entire body light up with…something I can't quite name.”

After reading and loving Cora Rose’s contribution to the 2023 Worthy Pride anthology, I jumped at the chance to read Diablo and was certainly not disappointed. Now I’m going to have to go back and read the entire Unexpected series!

As bratty as he was, Diablo was such a fun character - he had me laughing out loud from the first chapter. Skylar definitely met his match when he took on Diablo’s bodyguard duties - his dad was formerly employed by Anthony Costello so he feels an innate sense of duty. Skylar’s just trying to keep Diablo safe, but Diablo’s fighting him every step of the way with some hilarious, dangerous, and downright sinful results. This book moved at a nice pace, and the idea of it being low-angst but high-heat is unquestionably a fantastic combination. I’m so pleased that Diablo and Skylar got their happily-ever-after, and although it might not be considered conventional (please don’t tick Diablo off or you’ll face the wrath of his saws) it was more than perfect for the couple. Meeting Diablo’s brother, Angelo, was so lovely and my fingers are crossed that he eventually gets his own happily-ever-after!
