The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle
3.0

Very powerful story of the forces at work in the exurbs near the borders.
The nature lovers, the so-called liberals, the more openly hedonistic, the opportunistic vulture and migrants trying to survive (some of which overlap with the previous descriptions too).
The pathos of the migrant story is real, though, perhaps fittingly, those characters are not as well developed as those on the American side.
You are definitely committed to the story by the end, but the beginning might take a while to draw you in with the characters' lack of empathy
