Brain On Fire: My Month of Madness
by Susannah Cahalan
This book was fascinating to read and created an air of what if. I happen to have been a fan of the TV show "House" and the process followed to diagnose Susannah's problem was very similar to this program - her doctors didn't give up until they found the source of the illness and a solution to start her back on the road to recovery. The what if part falls into the many hundreds of people suffering from mental illness who do not have the resources that Susannah had...who helps them? could they be "saved" if more research, time, medication, tests were available to them? I think books like this are important for those people who have friends or family who might be suffering from an unrecognizable illness - it could help shed light on something that is not within a doctors realm, enlighten them to new discoveries and solutions.
