Requiem by Lauren Oliver

5.0

I loved this book! I had the opportunity of re-reading the first two books before reading Requiem and I am so glad I did because I feel like I understood the story more. I would like to start off by saying that I did not read this series for the romance between Lena and Alex, I was drawn to this series based on the idea of living in a world where falling in love was considered the worst sickness of all. It is a beautiful and mysterious idea and I admire Lauren Oliver for coming up with something so raw and different for a generation of young readers who have been brought up with the typical romance novel.

I have never read a series where the main character goes through extreme, drastic, and traumatizing experiences in each book. The Lena in Requiem is night and day from the Lena from Delirium and thats what I love most about this series! She is realistic in a way that her life experiences have hardened her and made her into a better and stronger person. Her trust in relationships are tested throughout this series, we finally get to meet her mother! After the tease in Pandemonium I was wondering if we would ever meet her. I was very excited when it finally happened! We see a side of Alex that I never saw coming and I'm still not sure if we ever get an explanation for why he treated Lena so poorly and then randomly loved her again at the end. As I said before I didn't read this story for the romance so it would not have been the end of the world if Oliver had decided that they didn't belong together in the end. But I'm sure she was worried about death threats from crazy obsessed teens who don't realize that in the end its just a story. But I guess I am ok and content with the love stories happy ending even tho this series is so much more than that. Julian I love Julian! Yes people you can love more than one person in a life time even if you are a character in a YA romance novel! This series is after all about rebelling against the norm which in this case is allowing yourself to fall in love.
I will admit I was upset when raven died! I loved her as a character, she was a born leader and Lena would not have survived the wilds without her guidance and though love.
I think Lauren Oliver is brilliant for giving us the perspective of HANA! in this last book. It gives the reader the best or reality of both worlds. I knew Frank was evil from the first page he was introduced and I was happy that the ABUSIVE jerk got what he deserved! To me Hana proved that you can be cured and LOVE someone because she did save her best friend in the end!

In the end this is a series of going against the norm and standing up for what your believe in and I think Oliver did a phenomenal job building a story and sticking to it. But in all honestly I was a little confused by the ending since there was no epilogue explaining what life is like after the invalids won the battle. It almost felt like she was giving herself an opportunity to come back to the series someday if she feels the need to! But in the end that would be her decision and I am content and happy with the over all outcome of this series. Must respect Lauren Oliver!
