Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
fast-paced
4.75
I went into this reread not expecting it to hold up but it kinda did? It was hard to ignore the (sometimes blatant) sexism, and knowing that Orson Scott Card sucks in general didn't help. Even without that, this isn't a perfect book by any means. The Peter and Valentine side plot was underdeveloped and a lil boring. I love all the Battle school stuff, but I did wish we could've slowed down sometimes to really make the monotonous and depression inducing battles feel that way. I get that leaving us with no breathing room might've been a stylistic choice, and the fast-paced style works well in a young adult or middle-grade book. I get the feeling that O.S.C. didn’t really want this to be a teen/children's book though. I constantly forgot that the kids were kids (except the book would unnecessarily tell me that the kids are more like adults repeatedly). I liked Ender as a character more than I remember liking him on my first read — maybe because I was only a little older than Ender when I first read it. All in all, I was thoroughly entertained reading this, and the flaws were made up for by the nostalgia.
