The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer

I don’t think epistolary novels are without fault. You’d have a hard time finding one that a reviewer didn’t complain about lazy writing, characters that weren’t well-formed, or romances that seem lacking.

I wasn’t sold on this book at the beginning. I liked the idea. I loved the characters on the island but I wasn’t very fond of the sister in Scotland and I was glad that we didn’t have to read much from her. I could tell from the beginning who the romance would be between and then grew increasingly bored with the lack of action between the two characters. I wish the romance had been written better. The beginning set you up for two people that mesh well together and then nothing really happens.

That being said, I liked it. I would read it again, maybe once more in my lifetime. I love the idea of people being connected by books and using books as an escape. I loved most of the characters but hated how many characters had names that started with an S—Sidney, Susan, Sophie. I can’t wait to watch the movie.
