The book thief was one of my favorite reads this year! I loved the quirky style of writing (the book is narrated by a personified death) which added another level of depth to the story. It was not written like a normal book in that it had many side notes written by death, background info about characters, foreshadowing, humor, etc.

I typically don’t reach for books about Nazi Germany or the Holocaust, not because it isn’t important or interesting. But because I have just read so many historical fictions about the topic, and it is quite “over saturated” within the historical fiction genre. But this book was delivered so differently it appealed to me.

Not to mention the actually contents of the story which were pretty good, I always enjoy stories given through the eyes and ears of children because they provide such raw details and have such an imagination.

However I will say the ending was a little underwhelming for me. I did cry (I cried several times while reading this book), but it
didn’t have that slow burn, that kills you slowly, it was a quick, she got out of the basement to find all her family and friends were dead type of ending with little reflection

Overall I really enjoyed this book, especially the writing style, but the ending was a bit underwhelming. So if you haven’t read this book yet, I would highly recommend!!!
