This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti

5.0

I devoured This Present Darkness, a novel of over 400 pages, in a few hours. Such is the skill of Frank Peretti and the intensity of his subject matter.

The little town of Ashton is under attack. No shots have been fired. No invading army is marching through the streets. An invisible battle is about to be fought, a battle between the Host of Heaven and the Hordes of Hell. Caught in the middle are two struggling souls. Pastor Hank Busche is trying to hold on to his faith and his church as division and hatred wear on both. Newspaper editor Marshall Hogan is confronting a dark conspiracy threatening his family, his friends, and his sanity. As they search for answers they come to realize there are those among the town's elite who will go to any lengths to silence them. Even more frightening, these citizens are in league with dark spiritual forces who would like nothing more than to destroy them mind, body, and soul. But these two men are not alone. Silent, unseen Heavenly warriors guard their every step, waiting for the time to fight back. When that time comes, little Ashton will never be the same.

Peretti is a wordsmith of the highest degree. His characters are real enough to be the neighbors from across the street. His plot pulls readers in and refuses to let them go until the last page has been turned. His descriptions of Heavenly and Hellish entities will have you looking over your shoulder for days, trying to catch a glimpse of kind, golden eyes or praying that wasn't a puff of sulfurous breath. With every sentence Peretti shows the darkest corners of evil and illuminates them with the brightest light of hope.

This Present Darkness is not only a classic of Christian fiction, it is a classic of fiction in general. I recommend it to anyone who wants a clearer picture of spiritual warfare, or who is simply searching for an intense, well-crafted thriller.
