Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld

I have never read a book like this: not just a parallel universe but also not following the conventional conflict-climax-resolution format of a fictional story.

This novel was like an invitation to see Hillary as you might a good friend: evolving over time, capable in her own right, yet still not immune to error or misjudgements. I feel preoccupied now with the possibilities of what her life might have been like, how things might have been different for her and us, impactful in different ways, if she had not married Bill or some other charismatic man. If the world could have seen her and her potential as its own, not as the wife of Bill Clinton. And importantly, this transposes to so many other women who have not been recognized for their full potential for its own sake.

What I appreciate most about this novel is that it caused me to confront the ways I myself have blindly accepted the media's demonization of Hillary without ever really considering the woman behind that portrayal. I don't know how much of the story of Hillary as a young woman was true, but I enjoyed "getting to know her," or who she might have been, through this means.

Perhaps the deepest takeaway was pondering the day when a woman will be taken seriously enough to lead the United States, when she will overcome all the ridiculous sexist barriers that we face. I must say, especially after the recent presidential debate in the U.S., this novel has me quite emotional and pensive.
