Perhaps it was because I was under a deadline to finish this book (due soon at the library), and I read it on the heels of Priory of the Orange Tree, but this book became tiresome quickly. No doubt the author is very talented, and the book well-written; I just found myself skimming a lot after recognizing a pattern in the writing that ebbs and flows between plot and descriptive passages in a formulaic manner. Only 2 characters from different subplots connect in a meaningful way--the other subplots might as well have been separate books, they were so weakly linked. Although the ending was a little too drawn out, there are some moments in the falling action that make reading the book worth it. My advice is if you just finished reading Priory, take a break before reading this one. I might change my review to something better later, but right now I am exhausted after reading this.
