The Rom-Com Agenda by Jayne Denker

3.0

Ugh… I did not read the blurb and I had different expectations.. It was not a bad book but it was not GREAT either.

The Rom-Com Agenda is about this guy, Eli, that did a Teddy Mosby on his girlfriend and proposed way too soon. She said no and went to Europe for the summer but he did not give up on her and now his friends have this agenda that they want him to watch rom coms to make him have a glow up and get the girl. Meanwhile we have Leah, or FMC that saw all that happened and while working on several jobs to save money and move out of this small town, gets sucked into Eli’s (the guy) friendship circle and start helping him with the glow up.

This book seems all fun and jokes but it ends up having a quite heavy side at it. Leah is a girl that was on the foster system, bouncing family to family until find her last one. Not only she had a tough upbringing but in her latest family her guardian falls ill with cancer and she is the solo care taker.
I think for one side it was nice to see the struggles people have with taking care of someone sick and then mourning, however I don’t think the execution was good.

Leah comes out more as playing victim of the situation rather than mourning. That made me think of her as annoying at the beginning of the book rather than empathizing with her situation.

Honestly, if the author had focus more on the rom com aspect of it and made it a light book instead of trying to bring heavy topics but not really work them well, this book would have been much more enjoyable for me.
