I love El-Arifi’s queer fantasy world building and the disability representation with Hassa. There’s strong themes of “history is written by the victor” which I love, especially the commentary on propaganda. I liked the themes of power. Always love a good female/queer rage book.
I was surprised to like Sylah in the beginning and not Anoor but then love Anoor by the end and Sylah’s fine. Hassa has my heart. I kinda hated Jond the whole time, we will see if he gets a redemption arc in book two.
I didn’t love the twist with the Sandstorm. I don’t love the romance following a predictable pattern. They hate each other, they love each other, and then at the end they are separated.
