The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

5.0

I loved this book- it was complex and beautiful, and everything I wanted it to be. Best of all, The Book Thief doesn't make the German people out to be evil, as so many books seem to do. Instead, it explained that many Germans were just as distraught by the horrors happening in their country as we are today, and it shows just how strong of an effect helplessness can have on a nation.

I also loved that Zusak explained exactly why Hitler gained so much power in Germany. It wasn't because the German people agreed with him. Hitler was a beautiful speaker- he knew what to say, and to whom, and he understood better than anyone that words hold more power over us that almost anything else.

I firmly believe that every young adult should be required to read this book. I will certainly be encouraging my own students to read it.
