bookishkelly 's review for:
Witchy, Vol. 1
by Ariel Slamet Ries
"Show them what you can do."
Witchy is set in a world where magical ability is indicated by the length of one's hair. After watching her father burned for his abilities, Nev's used a spell to hide the incredible length of her hair.
There are so many cool elements of this story, and I really wished they all came together in a way that worked for me as a reader. Despite being intrigued by the magical system, I struggled to engage with the story or the characters. It's the first book in a series and I wish a little more time had been given to developing characters to let us get to know them better.
It's the debut graphic novel from this artist. I'd be curious to see future projects from them because I do think there are some great ideas here, but I don't think I'll be continuing this particular series. Still, I can see other readers really enjoying it.
