Stargirl
by Jerry Spinelli
I found it hard to take this book seriously - while the events and emotions that surround "Stargirl" and her antics at Mica High School seem fairly realistic, the character of Stargirl herself is not. If I could have convinced myself that someone like her could actually exist, if I could have explained her behaviors or understood her motivation, maybe I would have enjoyed this book more. Stargirl's free-spirited ways and ignorance (naivety? dismissal?) of social norms seemed a little too self-righteous and pretentious. Even so, trying to figure out if Stargirl is supposed to be a real person or an enigma created for the sake of shedding light on the difficulties of "fitting in" in high school made me think about this book long after I had finished it. And I feel that anything thought-provoking deserves respect and appreciation, however annoying you find the main character.
